Sensory Spotlight: OnUp

Sensory Spotlight - OnUp Day Services For adults with learning differences and additional needs

In the weeks leading up to celebrating our 20 years in business,  we’re selecting 8 charities / organisations within the Ilkeston and Derbyshire area to receive a cash donation. Each of these wonderful groups offer various services, resources, support and more to the local community and we’re excited to share them with you all.

In addition to our donation, across the next few weeks we’ll be featuring a sensory spotlight on each individually so you can learn more about these fantastic organisations, the services they provide, how they plan on using their donation, and how you can also help to support.

OnUp

OnUp provides daytime opportunities for adults with learning differences and additional needs.

They offer a wide range of services and opportunities to aid essential learning, life skills, social skills, work skills and healthy living choices along with contributing to their community.

During their time with OnUp, attendees can develop their individual skills and personal goals through a range of activities and opportunities such as:

  • Cooking/Baking
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Everyday Maths and English
  • Gardening
  • Ladies / Men’s Groups
  • Social and Leisure Activities,
  • Shopping
  • General household skills
  • Well-being and Safety.

With our donation, OnUp plan to make improvements to their outdoor area, where they would like to start growing their own herbs and vegetables and use it as an outdoor seating area. They are also currently fundraising through our Enterprise activities (coffee mornings, craft fairs, bakery which are published on our Facebook page)  to raise money to create a Bar/ Games Room.

Where is OnUp located?

The hub is located at:

Scientific House 17 Bridge Street,

Sandiacre,

However, the group has lots of trips and days out that they organise for the participants, including the seaside, Centre Parcs, Alton Towers and more.

Last year, we had the pleasure of working with Enfield Town Library to create a brand-new sensory zone within their children's area. Fast forward to August 2023, we were invited to the grand opening of the space with the wonderful staff from the library, members of Enfield Council and of course lots of little ones ready to explore the new space.

Whether you participate in all or some Easter celebrations - there are many ways to incorporate sensory-friendly elements. In this week's blog post, we discuss how to set Easter expectations, prepare for the celebrations coming up and some fantastic sensory-friendly Easter activities.

At the beginning of the year, Sensory Technology had the pleasure of designing and installing a Sensory Garden for New Bridge School. After receiving a Dream Referral via Dreams Come True, they asked for our help in creating an outdoor sensory space for their pupils to enjoy.

In this week's Sensory Spotlight, we’ll be exploring Floor and Wall Padding - which is one of the most essential parts of sensory spaces. Throughout our spotlight, we’ll be discussing why floor and wall padding are so important, the benefits they give to users and how they can be incorporated into various different types of sensory spaces.
